Teresa Wakim, soprano

Soprano Teresa Wakim is an increasingly recognizable and sought-after performer in the historical performance scene. Hailing from Mystic, CT, she is a recent graduate of Boston University and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she studied with Penelope Bitzas and Lorraine Manz. She has furthered her studies abroad in Austria, Portugal, and Canada. Early Music America believes she has "mastered her ornamentation," and the Boston Globe has described her performances as "beautifully done." In 2004 she was a finalist in the vocal competition for Les Arts Florissants, Le Jardin des Voix, and in September 2005 she participated in the Ton Koopman Young Artist Concert at Carnegie Hall. She sings with several historically-informed ensembles, including Apollo's Fire, Boston Baroque, the Handel and Haydn Society, Amphion's Lyre, Seraphic Fire, Boston Hausmusik, Rialto Arts, and Newton Baroque. She has worked closely with many leading historical performance specialists, including Andrew Lawrence King, Peter Sykes, Joshua Rifkin, Martin Pearlman, Stephen Stubbs, and Jeannette Sorrell. She has taken part in two modern premieres of Baroque operas; Le Pouvoir de l'Amour at Oberlin and Boris Goudenow at the 2005 Boston Early Music Festival. Operatic performances include L'Europe Galante (Zaide), Alcina (Morgana), Pouvoir (La Fée), Dido and Aeneus (Belinda), and L'Orfeo (La Ninfa). She is the soprano I choral scholar in the Marsh Chapel Choir at Boston University under the direction of Scott Jarrett. An avid recitalist, Ms. Wakim has a passion for programming rarely performed works. Highlights from her 2006-2007 season include the role of  Zaide in L'Europe Galante at the Amherst Early Music Festival, solo recitals with Amphion's Lyre on the SoHIP series, performances in Miami with Seraphic Fire, performances in New York and Philadelphia with the Samuel Felsted Project, and performing as Artist in Resident with Back Bay Chorale for Bach's St. Matthew Passion, and Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610. Her work with Amphion's Lyre can be regularly heard on Boston's WGBH radio. During the day Ms. Wakim teaches a large studio of private voice students at Belmont High School, Hill House Music Academy, and in her home in Brookline.
